workshops featuring
Dorance Lorza from Colombia,
Mose Fanfan from The Congo and Rory
McGovern, a Cork based ethnomusicologist and music teacher who will be
conducting a music production course using
Ableton Live 5.
This unique series of masterclasses and workshops will also reveal how African
and Latin American music have influenced each other over many years and the
effect they have had more recently on the ever-changing face of today’s
contemporary and popular music.

Mose Se Sengo the celebrated Congolese guitarist aka 'Mose FanFan’ began his very successful career as a guitarist in Kinshasa in the 1960s. After forming a number of bands across the nations of central Africa Fanfan eventually arrived in Britain in 1983 and has been based there ever since. Multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Rory McGovern performs with a number of Ireland based world music ensembles and frequently uses a laptop computer to sample, compose and play live music. The Mose Fanfan Masterclass of Congolese music will be suitable for advanced level musicians who already practise either professionally or within an ensemble that rehearses regularly. This class will be of particular interest to musicians playing: Guitar, Bass, Saxophone, Percussion, Accordion and members of Horn Sections. The Latin Music workshops will be suitable for intermediate to advance level musicians particularly those playing Guitar, Piano, Piccolo, Trumpet, Percussion, Violin, Accordion, Vibes, Tres, Bass (acoustic or Electric) and Brass wind instruments. The Ableton Live production workshops will be suitable for all levels, beginners to advanced users (no musical knowledge necessary) and will provide participants with the skills required to compose music using Ableton Live 5 as a sequencer and with samples taken from the Congolese & Latin Music workshops. The music workshops will be arranged so that participants will be taught as an ensemble and rehearsed to be able to perform a number of songs/tunes on the showcase day (Saturday 15th April). The final decision of which musicians participate in the showcase event is at the sole discretion of the individual facilitator of each discipline. Dorance Lorza’s considerable, all-round, experience and knowledge of the Latin Music arena and Fanfan’s lifetime of experience in forming, conducting and arranging bands that play Congolese Rumba will be an invaluable asset to anyone attending these workshops who has an interest in furthering their musical careers or studies in Latin American music, African Jazz and/or Congolese music. Rory McGovern's experience in composing, sampling and playing music using Ableton Live 5 as a sequencer will very useful for anyone interested in music production, sampling and mixing using the modern technology that has only just become available in recent years. |
