Every week World Music DJ Nigel Wood from Dublin's

"Ear to the globe" which goes out every Monday at 10pm 'til 12 midnight on
103.2FM and live at
www.dublincityannaliviafm.com
I didn't have Seun Kuti's album in time for the programme (his gig with Fela's Egypt 80 is on in The Village on Oct 2nd), but Femi's "You Better Ask Yourself" is still my favourite song of the moment. And continuing the Nigerian theme, in a 70s style, is Orlando Julius and guitar-superstar Victor Uwaifo, both on labels dedicated to West African musical archive-ology. The amalgamation of five Congolese bands that is Kasai Allstars, do congotronics with added guitar. N'Faly Kouyate - from Guinea, based in Belgium - plays kora and balafon. He is best known here for his stint with the Afro-Celts. Jimmy Omonga is Congolese and Chiwoniso is from Zimbabwe - two fine voices, both backed by South African musicians. Orchestra Baobab have a Dublin gig in October - see below. They were one of my Womad highlights this year, along with the aforementioned Seun Kuti. The Buena Vistas celebrate Carnegie Hall in a landmark concert and then it's off to North-East Brazil for some Forro (or Foha), and Siba's marching band (can be viewed in marching mode at the Sines Festival on youtube). Robert Santiago does his panamerican thing on the Brazilian 'xote' style with affection and a hint of pastiche. And the Groanboxers do similar with backwoods Americana. Bellowhead celebrate whiskey and all the damage it does, while Seth Lakeman performs a folk version of Blur's 'Song 2'..... not really, but is reminiscent.... about the wreckers luring ships to their doom. Nitin Sawhney will be in Dublin at the end of October with his regular vocalist, Tina Grace, who is on this track, and is just one of a stellar cast of voices on the new album. Andrea Parodi and Elena Ledda play music from Sardinia. Savina Yannatou plays music from her native Greece and many other places to the East - very accomplished and very adventurous. Mary Hampton tells a riveting and cautionary tale - "When I drank the honey, I drank the bee". Joan Baez is accompanied by Steve Earle and Tim O'Brien on "Henry Russell's Last Words". Who will be accompanying her in Vicar Street? I don't know. Here is the playlist for "Ear to the globe", broadcast on Monday September 22nd.
